Scholarships

For Public Traveling Programs

Thanks to generous support from our funders, we are able to offer scholarships for public programs to quite a few qualified applicants each year. All public program offerings are eligible for funding. Traveling Programs scholarships are made possible by:

Lowell Institue
Bank of America

There are several criteria that we consider in granting a scholarship:

  1. Funding opportunities are limited to libraries and camps.

  2. 95% percent of our funding allowance is designated for sites within Massachusetts, and 2/3 of that total is designated for sites in greater Boston (approximately within I-495). We do have some funding available for sites in other states, as long as the site is less than 150 miles from the Museum of Science.

  3. Our scholarships are intended for sites with limited access to financial support from MCC grants, "friend organizations," and corporations. To make the fairest assessment possible, we will look at how many enrichment programs your site receives each year, what the cost is, and what kind of funding is used. If in doubt, please apply and provide us time to consider your application! We will typically respond to applications within a week. If accepted, you are then free to book the program(s) requested. Please note that we do not accept scholarship applications after a reservation has already been made for the same program.

  4. A site is limited to one funded program per calendar year.

  5. Public programs are limited to the summer months (mid-June through August) and during school vacations. We can present a maximum of one funded program per weekday; early applicants will get the most choices of dates and programs.

  6. We will begin reviewing funding requests for a given calendar year as early as November of the previous calendar year.

  7. The site must be able to provide an appropriate audience. We do not have any programming appropriate for pre-schoolers, though younger children are certainly welcome to attend with their parents or other adult supervision. Please review program specific information on the Museum's web pages.

  8. The site must meet any necessary space requirements. Please review the Museum's web page for the program you are interested in (particularly for Night Sky) to make certain that you have a large enough room. In addition, this room will need to be reserved for the entirety of our visit.

If you have any questions regarding the scholarship process, please contact us at travelingprograms@mos.org or 617-589-0354. It is our intention to provide as much funding as possible to those who need it most. Please review our most recent brochure for a new section on cost-saving options!

To apply, download the Public Program Funding Application form, print out the application, fill it in completely (use additional paper if needed), and either mail, fax, or email the application to:

If you do not receive an email from us within a week, we encourage you to write us at travelingprograms@mos.org to check on the status of your application.
